Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome back to Term 3! We are thrilled to see everyone back and already immersed in the excitement of the new term. The first two weeks have been incredibly busy and joyful, with Grandparents Day, 100 Days of Kinder, and Aspire setting a fantastic tone for what lies ahead.
Grandparents Day
Our Grandparents Day was a resounding success with a magnificent turnout of parents and grandparents. We began the day with a beautiful morning liturgy in the church where we sang, prayed, and reflected on the special stars that our grandparents are to us. This was followed by visits to the classrooms, where grandparents had a wonderful time engaging in games and conversations with the children. The morning concluded with treats, tea, and coffee in the library, where our guests had great things to say about their experience.
The strong and warm community feel was palpable. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the guests who travelled long distances or made early starts to join us, and to our staff and students for their efforts in creating such a memorable morning. Grandparents and those who take on this role have a special place in our hearts, and we are fortunate to have them in our lives and family memories.
100 Days of Kinder
Tuesday was a delightful day, as we celebrated 100 Days of Kindergarten. Surrounded by a very aging population on Tuesday was a very unusual situation to be in, when most days we are surrounded by the opposite. Our Kinder children are gorgeous at the best of times but when they are dressed as 100-year-olds they become even more so. Their adorable outfits brought smiles and laughter to everyone.
The children engaged in a series of fun and educational activities to mark this special milestone. They created self-portraits, made crowns adorned with 100 items, and received heart-warming, yet hilarious cards from their buddies featuring ‘aged’ photos (with thanks to a fun app) of how they might look in the future. It was a day full of creativity, reflection, and joy as they looked back on how much they have learned this year.
This day is a favourite for many, including myself and Remi, as we get to share in the excitement and fun with the Kinders and their teachers. Celebrating 100 days at school is a significant achievement, and we are so proud of our Kinder students for their hard work and enthusiasm.
ASPIRE
Our Stage 3 students were fortunate enough to attend this year’s ASPIRE performance at the Civic Theatre on Wednesday. High praise was given to our students from the staff who accompanied them, for they were a highly respectful, mature audience. We are thrilled to lay claim to two of the very talented performers, Ava K and Otis C, and believe they were stupendous in their roles! We are so proud of them for giving this a go, putting in the effort and commitment to learn lines and attend rehearsals and for taking charge of their minds and having a positive mindset about trying something new and a little nerve racking. Congratulations Ava and Otis!
This year’s production, ‘Disconnected’ follows the people of the small town of Singlebrook where the mayor has decided they no longer need a town crier! Daniel is outraged when Quentin Wordsworth is fired as the town crier, but nobody seems to care. All they want to do is stare at their phone screens … until the internet is mysteriously cut off! The audience then experiences the chaos that ensues as a town goes offline, and its young people bring back the art of town crying!
Upcoming Events
As we continue through Term 3, we have many more exciting events lined up:
- Gala Days: Enabling the students to experience sports that they are not necessarily overly familiar with along with connecting with students across our region.
- School Musical: A spectacular performance that will highlight our students' acting, movement and singing abilities. Practices are well on the way across all grades.
- Excursions and Incursions: Educational trips and in-school activities that promise to be both informative and fun.
- Anti-Bullying Week and Child Protection Week: Important weeks dedicated to fostering a safe and supportive environment for all students.
- Winter Appeal: Our initiative to help those in need during the colder months, which our school social justice team is organising.
- Book Week: Celebrating the joy of reading with various themed activities. This year’s book week theme is: Reading is magical! Start planning those Book Parade costumes now.
- Father’s Day Celebrations: Honouring and appreciating our dads with a special morning dedicated to them.
- Spring Ball: For the parents to meet, mix and mingle and have a terrific time in each others’ company whilst raising some funds for the school.
Sad News
We regret to inform you of the unexpected passing of Ms McCalden's mother, Maria, earlier this week. Fiona was incredibly close to her mother, and we ask that you keep her mother, Maria, in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time, as well as Fiona and her family. Vale, Maria.
Safety Notice
A safety reminder: Lisa, our school crossing supervisor, has reported a few near misses when parents pull out on Farquhar St after dropping off or picking up their children. Please be vigilant both in the mornings and afternoons to ensure the safety of our students and Lisa.
Money
We understand that on occasions you may not have small notes or coins when you go to give your children some canteen money. In order to have enough change in the canteen and to not be alarmed as to where big notes have come from, we ask that if you do give your children $20 or $50 notes to buy something, that you give a quick call or send a brief email to the office informing us of this.
We wish all our families a restful and hopefully dry weekend. Thank you for your continued support and involvement in our school community. Let’s make this term a memorable one!
Warm regards,
Karen

Positive Behaviour Learning (PBL)
Our PBL focus this fortnight is Act Safely – Moving safely. This is a big focus area as quite often children are reminded to be aware of their surroundings and how they move within them. In class, students are identifying ways we move safely (and unsafely) as they analyse different scenarios and how they can be most safe. On the playground teachers will be keeping a close eye on students who are walking on the concrete and playing safely on equipment. Hopefully many tokens will be given out!

St Mary of the Cross
Next Thursday, 8th August, 3 Gold will lead the school in prayer as we celebrate the
feast day of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, the patron saint of Australia. Mary led a remarkable life serving others. At an early age, Mary worked as a governess teaching her Aunt’s children as well as children living in poverty. Mary believed that all children deserved an education and dedicated her life to educating the poor and gave hope to many. St Mary was the founder of the Sisters of St Joseph which is the order that opened our school.
Please join us in the Hall on Thursday at 9am as a school community to pay tribute to this amazing lady.
First Communion
We joyfully acknowledge and celebrate the students making their First Communion over the coming weekends 10th/11th August and 17th/18th August. This milestone marks a significant step in their spiritual journey, being completely welcomed into the Catholic church, symbolising their deeper connection with Christ and the church community. We commend their dedication and preparation, which reflect their growing faith and understanding of God's love. This special occasion is not only a personal achievement for each child but also a moment of pride and joy for their families and our entire parish community. As they receive the Eucharist for the first time, we pray that they continue to grow in faith, hope, and love, always feeling the presence of Christ in their hearts. Please keep our communicants in your prayers by praying the following prayer.
Heavenly Father,
We lift up to You the young hearts and souls of our First Communion candidates. Bless these children as they prepare to receive the Holy Eucharist for the first time. May this sacred sacrament fill them with Your grace, love, and peace. Guide them in their faith journey, nurturing their trust in Your divine presence. Help them to grow in wisdom and understanding, embodying the teachings of Jesus in their daily lives.
Surround them with the support and prayers of their families, friends, and church community. May their hearts remain open to Your guidance and may they always seek to walk in Your light. As they receive the Body and Blood of Christ, let them feel the profound connection to Your love and the larger faith family.
We ask this through Your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.
Father's Day
Father’s Day is fast approaching and we as the St Joseph’s school community would love to celebrate how important our fathers, uncles, grandfathers or people who are like fathers to us are. After breakfast, we will celebrate the special time on Friday 30th August with liturgy in the Church.

Mathematical Accuracy, Fluency and Automaticity
Mathematical accuracy is crucial for effective problem-solving and comprehension. It involves performing calculations and solving problems without errors, as even small mistakes can lead to incorrect answers and misunderstandings. Developing accuracy requires attention to detail, systematic checking, and a strong grasp of fundamental principles. Prioritising accuracy builds a foundation for advanced reasoning and problem-solving, fostering confidence and competence. Before developing fluency and automaticity, accuracy and conceptual understanding are essential.
Mathematical fluency and automaticity are critical components of a student's math proficiency. Fluency refers to the ability to solve mathematical problems accurately and efficiently, while automaticity is the quick and effortless recall of basic math facts. Together, they enable students to tackle more complex problems with confidence and ease. Developing these skills involves consistent practice and reinforcement, allowing students to move beyond rote memorisation to a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts. As students become more fluent and automatic in their math abilities, they can allocate thinking to higher-order thinking and problem-solving, which are essential for success in more advanced mathematics.

We are excited to be partnering with Dr. Ange Rogers again to trial ‘The Number Fluency Program’. This term four classes will begin the trial with the aim to have all classes onboard by the end of this term. The program is a systemic approach to number fluency from Kinder to Year 6.
Dr. Ange Rogers, director of the Numeracy Teachers Academy, is renowned for her expertise in mathematics education and dedication to improving students' numeracy skills. With extensive experience in teaching and curriculum development, she designs innovative programs that make math accessible and engaging. Dr. Rogers emphasises building a strong foundation in basic math skills while fostering critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. Her commitment to enhancing math education has significantly impacted both educators and learners.

We look forward to trialling and launching the program to support our students learning.

Principal Appreciation Day
On Friday we celebrated a very special occasion that was dedicated to honouring and showing our heartfelt appreciation for the captain of our ship, Ms McGinlay.
Karen is a leader, mentor, and friend to all in our school community. Her dedication to cultivating a positive and inclusive learning environment, her unwavering support for students, staff and families, and her high standards and commitment to excellence makes St Joseph’s a wonderful place to be and learn.
Karen’s vision, leadership, and compassion have made a lasting impact on our school, and we are grateful for all she does. Principal Appreciation Day was a beautiful reminder of the love and respect we all have for our fearless leader.
International Day of Friendship
Tuesday 30th July was International Day of Friendship where each grade celebrated in their own unique ways in their classrooms with their teachers. For our littlest students in the school, the day was an extra special event that saw them celebrate the deep connections and friendships they have been able to form with each other in just 100 days!
School TV – Managing Screen Time
As we navigate the digital age, managing our children’s screen time has become an important aspect of parenting. Screens are everywhere: in our homes, classrooms, and even in our pockets. While technology offers valuable educational tools and entertainment, it's essential to strike a balance to ensure our children’s overall wellbeing. State Cross Country
On Tuesday the 23rd July, I competed at NSW PSSA All Schools State Cross Country at the international Sydney Equestrian Centre. As I competed at this same course 6 weeks earlier at Polding, I knew what I was in for...a course that was filled with hills, gravel, sand, mud and dirt. Out of a field of 75 athletes I came 16th and achieved my goal of finishing in the top twenty. I completed the 3 km course in 11 minutes, which was forty seconds faster than my Polding time. There were some very talented athletes there and a few of my friends from Polding came 4th and 6th to qualify for Nationals. In the combined team placing, my Polding team came 2nd overall. I was happy that I contributed to this medal as I was the third fastest Polding runner for my age group.

Touch Football World Cup
During the school holidays, our very own Miss Parish travelled back to Nottingham, England to compete in the Touch Football World Cup. Players from 39 countries across the globe competed in the 7-day event to see who would be crowned World Champs. Miss Parish joined the England team and carved it up, only losing in a close match to Australia in the round games. We were lucky enough to catch a few games streamed online, witnessing a diving try and even a sideline interview! Sadly, England and Miss Parish went down in a close match in the semifinal to New Zealand, but came out victorious against Scotland in the bronze medal match! Well done Miss Parish, we are all very proud of you.
Touch Football Gala Day
Yesterday saw our Year 5 and 6 students compete in the NSW Touch football gala day at Newcastle Touch fields. 72 of our students attended the day, competing in 7 teams across the boys and girls divisions. It was great to see our students, regardless of their touch experience, actively involved on the field and enjoying themselves, including a few playful dives in the mud (sorry to the parents who have to wash those uniforms tonight).
It was heartening to see all our Joey’s students participate with respect for referees, opponents, and teammates alike. The students really embodied the spirit of friendly competition, focusing on fun with friends and a little skill development, rather than just winning or losing.
A big thank you goes out to our volunteer parents; Shannon Burgess, Carly Beacher, Luke Jones, Jess Maxwell, Tammy Wilson, Dean Mantle, Brett Firman, Brendan McKell and Amanda Vickery. You all made the day possible with your support, cheerleading and supreme management skills. A big shout out also to all the parents who dropped off and picked up kids or came to watch a few games so that we could have such a fantastic day!
Term 3 is always an exciting time in the library.
Book Week
This year we celebrate Book Week in Week 5 with the wonderful theme of “Reading is Magic”. We have the amazing JD’s World of Magic visiting us, we have reading activities, both in class and around the school, we have activities at recess to display our magical skills and make some magical items, we have the terrific Scholastic Book Fair and finally, on Friday we have the awesome PARADE showcasing the imagination and magic of our students. I forgot to mention the magical food which will be available from the canteen at Recess on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
Get ready to experience all things magical.
